Memorial services for Pastor Vincent Francis Halter, Jr. (Ret. Col. USAF), 80, of Lake Wateree, will be held Friday, May 25, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Sumter. Rev. Michael Henderson and Rev. Larry Brown will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home,Camden Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Pastor Halter’s memory to Kairos Prison Ministry of South Carolina, P.O. Box 6211, Columbia, SC 29260, or the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter, 460 S. Fair Street, Camden, SC 29020.

Born in Jacksonville, FL, on April 19, 1932, he was the son of Vincent Francis Halter and Louise Huff Halter. He was a graduate of the Citadel and received his Master’s Degree from George Washington University. Vince was a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers minor league team. Pastor Halter was a Retired United States Air Force Colonel with 27 years of service. While serving, he was a fighter pilot and instructor of F-102, F-4 and F-15’s. He was Base Commander at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. After serving overseas with various NATO assignments, he retired in 1979 from Shaw Air Force Base. Pastor Halter was an associate Dean at USC- Sumter for 18 years and became a local Pastor in1998. He retired from ministry in 2011 after serving the Rembert-Saint John United Methodist Church Charge. His community involvement included the Sumter Rotary Club, Sumter Chamber of Commerce, Sumter Civitans, Trian Club, Lugoff-Elgin Water Board, Golden Age Club, Walk to Emmaus and Kairos.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Tindall Halter; son, Michael Louis Halter (Kathleen) of Lake Wateree; daughter, Lisa Michelle Halter of Lexington and Angela Halter Marshall (Lee) of Sumter; grandchildren, Andrew Halter (Darylann), James Halter (Leslye) and Brandon Halter; great grandchildren, Brailey Halter and Bradley Halter; cousins, Sandra Boggs and Marion Craven. He was predeceased by a son, David Vincent Halter.
