Funeral services to celebrate the life of William Gardner Blake, 91, of Columbia, SC and Rumson, NJ will be held Friday, December 19, 2014 at 10:00 AM in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday, December 18, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel.

Mr. Blake, husband of Maria Chacon Blake, died Monday, December 15, 2014. He was born in Springfield, MA. Mr. Blake was the son of the late William Ernest Blake and Isabel Dean Gardner Blake. He was a US Navy veteran having served four years in active duty during World War II, and twenty years as a reservist. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery when the U.S.S. Bismarck Sea aircraft carrier was destroyed in the South Pacific.

He had a successful career in international banking, working for Manufacturers Hanover Trust in New York City. He was active in pioneering trade between North America and Eastern Bloc countries. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of South Carolina and also completed graduate studies at Harvard University. Mr. Blake was a Master Gardener and a member of several gardening clubs, an avid hiker, jogger and outdoorsman.

Along with his wife and his sisters, Alice Ford of Camden, SC and Margaret McConnell (Rev. William) of Portsmouth, NH, he is survived by his children, Maria Blake-Myers of Carbondale, CO, William C. Blake (Susan) of Camden, SC, John G. Blake (Susan) of Rowley, MA, Thomas C. Blake (Stacey) of Wakefield, NH., Stephen P. Blake (Kim) of Orange Park, FL. and Isabel B. Darwin (Steven) of Cambridge, MA.
