William Henry Stokes passed away on April 1, 2016 in Richmond, Va., formerly of Bishopville.

He was born April 22, 1923, the eldest child of Willie C. and Bertha Deas Stokes of Bishopville.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Southside Baptist Church, 200 York Street, Camden. Rev. Everett Reconnu will officiate. A fellowship time will follow the memorial service.

“Henry” graduated from Ashwood High School, Class of 1941. Her served in the U.S. Army, Pacific Theater, and later retired from the Air Force after twenty years. 

While stationed in England, he met and married Vera Owen. They had two daughters and three grandchildren. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1963 and later worked in Saudi Arabia for twelve years.

“Henry” was predeceased by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Karen Lowry, a sister, Mary Davis of Camden, a son-in-law Irving Lowry of Richmond.

Survivors include his daughter, Kristen Gibson (Glenn), three grandchildren, sisters, Ann Huggins, Ray King, and a brother, Ed Stokes of Camden.

As many will attest, a major theme in his life was service to others, demonstrated by his work for the American Red Cross.

He made many friends around the world during those military years. He and Vera traveled around the world. He will be missed by all who knew him.
