After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and completed flight training one year later. In 1944 he was assigned as a pilot in the 8th Air Force based in England, where his crew flew air/sea rescue missions accomplishing numerous landings on the North Sea to retrieve downed aviators. In 1945 he returned to Erie to begin his family while working as a chemist. In 1948 he started his 27 year career in sales with Proctor and Gamble and moved to Meadville, PA. Upon retirement from P&G, he and Shirley moved to Camden, SC. They were both active in the Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, Shirley as secretary and Bill serving in numerous leadership positions in the church. Several years after Shirley’s passing, Bill moved to independent living in Matthews and Charlotte, NC. As an avid woodworker, he made everything from furniture to picture frames to toys. He also enjoyed bird watching and facilitated others in that hobby by making bird houses and feeders into his early 90’s.
