William Miles

William Preston Miles, of Elgin, passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2011. He was born in Blaney, SC on June 8, 1938. William was the son of the late Walter L. Miles and Lillie E. Owens Miles.

William first joined the Navy Reserve after high school, and then joined the United States Air Force, where he was honorably discharged on family hardship leave after the death of his father in May of 1958. William was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Elgin, SC.

Mr. Miles was the owner of Miles Septic Tank Service during the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was the manager of the Town of Elgin Water Department for seventeen years. He then served as the South Carolina Rural Water Department (SCRWD) State Circuit Rider for nine years. He retired in 2003. After retirement, William enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and taking care of his farm animals. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Stockman Miles, three children; LaDonna (Stephen) Dixon, of Blythewood, SC, Greg Miles, and Aniko (Jason) Gordon, both of Elgin; grandchildren, Bradley Miles, Morgan Dixon, Jessica and Jay Gordon, and one great grandson, Conner Miles; sisters, Mildred Branham, Doris Fulmer, Faye Duich, Gloria Squires, and Betty Poole. He was predeceased by his mother and father, one brother, Oliver Miles, and one sister, Emmadora Bilbo.

Visitation will be held at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff Elgin Chapel on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 PM. A funeral service honoring his life will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Elgin, SC at 4:00 PM.

Rev. Ken Jackson and Rev. Dan Griffin will officiate. Burial will follow in the church

cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sonny Goff, Freddie Mubarak, Bobby Walsh, Robert Stockman, C.R. Miles, and Roger Ross. Members of Mr. Miles’s

Hillcrest Baptist Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pall bearers.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital (8th Floor) and especially Dr. Mark Mayson and Dr. William Babcock for their professional and caring support. Also, special love to ICU nurse Jeremy Noble, MUSC, Charleston, SC for his extraordinary care and concern. Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, Post Office Box 85, Elgin, SC 29045.
