Bel Canto, a musical ensemble of Columbia, will present a Christmas program on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. at Moriah Baptist Church, located on the corner of Broad and York Streets. The program will feature carols, spirituals, modern pieces and gospel selections.
"Bel Canto" is an Italian phrase meaning "beautiful singing" and is also known as a style of singing. Bel Canto’s mission is to "offer musical diversity as a creative form of musical expression and inspiration in performing several genres of inspirational and classical music." Shawn Smith Robinson, founder was given a vision to formulate the group "to praise God through music and to draw others to Jesus Christ." The first official meeting was March 5, 2012.
Mrs. Robinson holds a B.A. degree in music performance and a M.A. degree in counseling. She is a native of Columbia, who now resides in Camden and is working on her doctoral degree. The singers hail from Kershaw, Lee and Richland counties and several of them hold degrees in music. The public is cordially invited and the program is free.
