Carlos Harris (left), coordinator of the Entre Amigos, receives the Excellence in HIV/AIDS prevention award during the HIV/AIDS conference.
Every October, the HIV/STD Division of the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) conducts its annual HIV/AIDS conference in Columbia. Speakers from different medical disciplines, social workers, and other HIV/STD professionals from across the nation share the most recent advances in medical research, treatment and the social needs of those infected and/or affected by the disease. Since South Carolina is fourth in the nation in the incidence of new cases of HIV, there is an urgent need to educate local communities about the facts and myths surrounding HIV/AIDS. One of the highlights of each year’s conference is the recognition of individuals or agencies who work in the HIV arena either helping, taking care of individuals infected with HIV, or advocates who educate communities.
