Historic Camden brings The Swamp Fox to town
Francis Marion.JPG
We will never know if the outcome of the Battle of Camden would have been different had Francis Marion and his “Ragged Regiment” joined General Horatio Gates’s army that fateful August 1780 morning. Interestingly, “The Swamp Fox” and his band of some 20 men and boys had been in Gates’s camp for several days prior to the battle. A source of amusement and mockery among the troops, Gates was much relieved when Marion offered to distribute the commander’s new assurances proclamation to the citizenry and headed out with his motley crew.
