The Kershaw County 4H Healthy Lifestyles Senior team won the 1st place award at the Regional 4H Healthy Lifestyles competition held on August 6 in Chester.
The competition is modeled after such television cooking challenge programs as the Food Network’s "Iron Chef." The youth who participated in the competition were required to create an unannounced healthy dish from a prepared recipe.
The competition consisted of the team members preparing their healthy dish of choice, making an oral presentation about the prepared dish, interpreting a food label, planning a menu that included the prepared healthy dish, and creating a fitness plan.
The healthy lifestyle challenge also provided the youth participants the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of culinary techniques and food safety skills to the judges.
The team will advance to the State 4H Healthy Lifestyles competition in October at the State Fair. The contest is sponsored by SC 4H, Zest Quest, and United Health Care.
