KHGC meets Monday

The King Haiglar Garden Club will start 2016 with its first meeting and program of the year at 3 p.m. Monday at 1819 Hobkirk Court, Camden.

Judy Smith will host members and guests; co-hostesses Marietta Gordon and Grace Young will provide refreshments during social time.

The program, "Soil and Fertilizers" will be presented by Jackie Jordan, Clemson Extension Agent for Kershaw County.

The arrangement theme for January is "Appreciating Flowers in My Favorite Vase." Members are reminded to display horticulture specimens from their gardens. Arrangements and specimens need to be in place by 3 p.m. for judging. This month’s judges are Margie Lane, Carolyn Willens, and Carolyn McKittrick.

Garden maintenance volunteers for Jan. 2016 are Sandra Lease and Norma Young.

January garden tips

• Time for a soil test. Take sample to the Clemson Extension Office in the container provided.

• Keep pansies deadheaded to promote continuous blooming

• Prune fruit trees and blueberry shrubs

Fruit of the month - Cranberry

Vegetable of the month – Yucca root
