The Lynches Fork Historical Society meeting will be held on Monday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at the Bethune Woman's Club. The public is invited.

Ben Brannon, local historian, will speak on the Cash-Shannon duel which took place in Lee County on July 5, 1880. This would be the last duel fought in South Carolina.

The duel was fought between Colonel E. B. C. Cash of Chesterfield County and Colonel William M. Shannon of Camden, who had been friends for many years. The duel developed out of what Cash termed a "charge of fraud" made against his wife by Shannon and William L. DePass, both of whom were attorneys in Camden.

The first shot from Cash’s gun proved to be fatal for Shannon. Cash would be tried for murder and dueling but that trial ended in mistrial.

Cash was acquitted in a second trial held in 1881.
