Sunday, September 11, St. Matthew United Methodist Church (SMUMC)on Black River Road celebrated their 150th church anniversary with a morning service and an afternoon service/concert. St. Matthew UMC, a predominantly black church, was founded in 1866 under a grape arbor with a few members. It was a church school – as most churches were in those days -- and it was refuge where blacks could worship as well as educate- reading, writing and arithmetic.
