Commander Albert Hough and UDC President Susan Baskin welcome guests to the memorial service.
On December 13, 2014 at the fountain in Hampton Park, the John D. Kennedy Chapter number 308 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Joseph B. Kershaw Camp number 82, SCV held the 152nd memorial service honoring Sgt. Richard Rowland Kirkland., “Angel of Marye’s Heights.” December 14, 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg beneath the firing of battle, Sgt. Kirkland could not bear the moans and groans of the dying Union soldiers and their cries for water. With permission from General Joseph Kershaw, he filled canteens and climbed the wall to appease their cries knowing that he was risking his life.
