Above, Ceryl Johns (left) and Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburk are pictured at a special memorial ceremony held in honor of hundreds of thousands of women who would become symbolically known as Rosie the Riveter. These women, both in the U.S. and Europe, left their homes and families during World War II to work in farms, factories, farms, offices, shops while the men were in combat. Johns, whose mother, Elsie Johns, was a Rosie in wartime England, was a major organizer of the event which was held May 14 in Monument Square. - photo by Provided by Ceryl Johns
