Feb. 2, The Upton Trio will join the Price House Commission to bring an evening of classical and gospel music to the Camden community
The purpose of the Upton Trio, created in 1989 by Sylvia Upton Wood, is to provide concerts to the "artistically underserved" throughout Kershaw County.
The Price House Commission’s mission is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about African-American life, history and culture to Camden and the Kershaw County community.
The two will join to fund-raise to benefit educational programs for the Price House and the Upton Trio.
The Upton Trio’s education project for 2013 is "Strum Me a Story,"
Billy Shepherd, pianust of the Upton Trio is excited about their upcoming partnership with the Price House.
"We wanted to create a concert that involved a partnership with a community agency," said Shepherd.
He is confident that the concert will be a great experience for the community.
"It is such an inspired process of selecting the vocalist deciding on the pieces, working out the rehearsal schedule … Everyone is working together..it’s easy, fun, inspiring, energizing…all of those things develop into a wonderful music experience. We are having a wonderful experience preparing for this concert. This is a rare experience of creative positive energy," said Shepherd
Shepherd wants the community to benefit from what he believes is the gift of music.
"All of us want to have fun…For us that means giving ourselves completely to the service of the music. When we do that we are intensely blessed and we want to share that joyful healing transformation with our community," said Shepherd,
"Music for me is a gift that I am grateful for to the point that it is difficult to find words to describe it. I take it as my purpose in life to use music to bring the community together."
The introductory piece will be Tchaikovsky’s Trio in A minor which will proceed into the first spiritual for the evening, "He died on Calvary."
A pre-concert will be held in the Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County at 5:30 on Feb. 2. Light refreshments will be served.
The musical program will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature the Upton Trio along with vocalists from Kershaw County.
