Miss Starling, Mr. Ray wed

Miss Meghan Elizabeth Starling and Mr. Stuart Darrel Evans Ray of Columbia were united in marriage August 6, 2011 at Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia.  Dr. Robert Winburn officiated the 6:00 p.m. double ring ceremony.

The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Lee Starling, II of Elgin, is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Dorton, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry L. Starling, all of Elgin and the great-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Hair of Columbia.  She is a 2007 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School and is pursuing a degree in Administrative Office Technology at Central Carolina Technical College.

The bridegroom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Ray of Columbia, is the grandson of Mrs. Mildred Evans and the late Mr. Stanley Evans, of Columbia, and Mrs. Jeanne Ray and the late Mr. Valton Ray of Florida.

He is a 2005 graduate of Spring Valley High School, a 2009 graduate of The University of South Carolina, and is employed by Richland County School District II as the Band Director for E.L. Wright Middle School and an Assistant Director for Spring Valley High School Marching Band.

Musicians for the ceremony were pianist, Mr. Robert Hatfield, of Columbia, vocalist and guitarist, Miss Emily McCollum, of Elgin and the Palmetto Brass Quintet of Columbia. Musical selections included “Canon in D” for the seating of the Grandmothers, “Trumpet Voluntary” for the seating of the Mothers, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” for the processional, and “Bridal Chorus” for the Bridal Processional.

The Maid of Honor was Miss Britton Elliott of Columbia.

The bridesmaids were Miss Ashley Gardner of Columbia, Miss Kendra Middleton, of Columbia, Mrs. Whitney Watson, of Elgin, Miss Catelin McManus, of Rembert, and Mrs. Sarah Ray, of Raleigh, North Carolina. 
The best man was Mr. Joseph Ray of Raleigh, North Carolina, brother of the groom.

The groomsmen were Mr. Tyler Starling, of Elgin, Mr. Brian Glosh, Mr. Michael Lawing, Mr. Alan Butler, all of Columbia, and Mr. Tommy Miserendino of Virginia.

The flower girl was Miss Mary-Elizabeth McCaskill and the ring bearer was Master Davis W. Catoe , both of Columbia.
Meghan was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents. The bride wore a formal  strapless tulle fit- and-flare gown in ivory by Oleg Cassini featuring hand-detailed lace appliqués and a sweep train The one tier veil was adorned with a scattered bead floral motif.

Ceremony greeters were Mr.  and Mrs. Howard Sanders of Columbia. Reception greeters were Mr.  and Mrs. Lemuel Wooten of Elgin.

Mrs. Linda “Cookie” Winburn of Columbia served as the Wedding Director.

A reception followed at the NCO Club at Fort Jackson in Columbia.


Meghan and Stuart were honored with an engagement party hosted by the bride’s parents at their home. A Pampered Chef party was hosted by Mrs. Felicia Elliott, Mrs. Terri McManus, and Miss Cati McManus at Mrs. Elliott’s home.  A family shower was hosted by Mrs. Jennifer Catoe, and Mrs. Gwen Starling at the bride’s parent’s home.  Mrs. Sarah Ray hosted a lingerie shower at the bride’s home.  A bridal brunch was hosted by Mrs. Charmon Shuler, Mrs. Janette Smith, and Mrs. Dawn Hollis at Stonefire Grill in Columbia. The rehearsal dinner was hosted by the groom’s family at The Woodlands Country Club in Columbia.

After a honeymoon trip to Charleston, the couple will reside in Columbia.
