Anyone walking through or passing by Monument Square has seen the tall, beautiful monument in the middle of the park surrounded by a small iron fence. The monument marks the final resting place of Lt. Col. James Polk Dickinson of Camden, Camden’s hero of the Mexican War. The monument stands as a memorial to a man whose renown has faded over time for deeds achieved in a war whose memory may hold less veneration today than in years past.
Who is the soldier in the park?
