Balance the Budget romps to Colonial Cup win

There were times, Mark Watts admitted, when he looked behind from his mount atop Balance the Budget in Saturday’s 48th running of the $150,000 Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup when he was more than a tad surprised by what he couldn’t see. In what was more of a public schooling than a hurdle race, Watts and Balance the Budget blew open a lead of 30 lengths near the midway mark as nobody came up to challenge the pacesetters. From there, the duo cruised home to a 6 ¼-length victory in the feature from the 84th renewal of the Carolina Cup Races at the Springdale Race Course.
