WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Kershaw County Post 17 received a brilliant pitching performance from The Citadel-signee Grey Hoke in the opener and a walk-off solo home run from Russ Radcliffe in the nightcap to sweep Haywood (N.C.) Post 47, 6-1 and 3-2, in an American Legion Senior Opening Day doubleheader on Saturday at Tuscola Ballpark. In Game 1, Hoke and Mars Hill College signee Kaleb McCurry were locked in a scoreless pitching duel for the first four frames. But in the fifth, KC Post 17 managed to break open the game to give Hoke a comfortable crooked number lead to work with when it scored four runs. Gunner Smith began the rally with a single to center, then a throwing error and a bunt single by Ethan Beasley loaded the bases for the visitors from the Palmetto State. Catcher Austin Hayes drove in Smith with the first run when he grounded into a fielders' choice to shortstop Cal Raleigh, a Clemson commit.
