Austin waived by Panthers

Former Camden High School and Clemson University football standout Thomas Austin was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday.The release of the 6-foot-4, 310-pound guard/center came before the Panthers headed to Wofford College in Spartanburg to begin pre-season camp on Friday.Austin, 26, was signed by the Panthers on Oct. 11, 2012, a day after they lost Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil to his season-ending injury injury in the middle of the 2012 season after Austin was signed to the Panthers’ practice squad earlier in the year. Austin played in four games at guard and center for Carolina, starting at guard in the season-ending 44-38 win over the New Orleans Saints.Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings in 2010, Austin was released on the final day of cuts by the Vikings. Weeks later, he signed on as a member of the New England Patriots’ practice squad.After being released on the final day of cuts by the Patriots in 2011, Austin was quickly claimed and signed with the Houston Texans for the 2011 season in which he appeared in three games.He went to camp with the Patriots in 2012 before signing with the Panthers early in the season.A 2005 graduate of Camden High School, Austin was a member of the 2004 South Carolina Shrine Bowl Team following a season in which he garnered All-State laurels.
