Battle of Camden passing league tourney features two USC commits

Camden High School will host 13 football programs from throughout the state in the second annual Battle of Camden 7-on-7 passing league shootout and Hogmen Challenge to be held at the Bulldog Athletic Complex along Ehrenclou Drive as well as inside Zemp Stadium on Wednesday, June 26.

In addition to the host Bulldogs, other schools participating will be Andrew Jackson, A.C. Flora, Ben Lippen, Chesterfield, Lake City, Lower Richland, Myrtle Beach, Nation Ford, River Bluff, Robert E. Lee Academy, Sumter, West Florence and defending champion Westwood. Camden and Lower Richland will also field B teams to round out the field.

Among the visiting players slated to participate in the tournament are Myrtle Beach rising senior quarterback and USC commitment Luke Doty, Sumter wide receiver and University of North Carolina commit Tylee Craft and Sumter cornerback and USC pledge O’Donell Fortune.

The 7-on-7 --- non-contact --- competition will have three pods of five teams each playing simultaneously in a round robin format before being cross-seeded into a single-elimination tournament. There will be a lunch break after round robin play. The first games in each pool will begin at 9:30 a.m. and there will a break for lunch at 11:45 a.m. 

Single elimination tourney play will begin at 1:05 p.m. with semifinals and the championship game to be played at Zemp Stadium..

The Hogmen Challenge is a series of drills featuring offensive linemen from participating schools.

The events are free and open to the public. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.

Pod A (Zemp Stadium): Camden A, Nation Ford, Sumter, Lower Richland, Myrtle Beach; 9:30 a.m.: Camden vs. Lower Richland, Sumter vs. Nation Ford; 10:05 a.m.: Camden vs. Sumter, Lower Richland vs. Myrtle Beach; 10:40 a.m.: Sumter vs. Lower Richland, Nation Ford vs. Myrtle Beach; 11:15 a.m.: Camden vs. Nation Ford, Sumter vs. Myrtle Beach; 11:50 a.m.: Camden vs. Myrtle Beach, Nation Ford vs. Lower Richland

Pod B: Westwood, A.C. Flora, West Florence, Chesterfield, Lake City; the fields are located within the track at the Bulldog Athletic Complex on Bramblewood Plantation Rd., off Ehrenclou Drive; 9:30 a.m.: Westwood vs. A.C. Flora, West Florence vs. Chesterfield; 10:05 a.m.: Westwood vs. West Florence, Chesterfield vs. Lake City; 10:40 a.m.: Westwood vs. Chesterfield, A.C. Flora vs. Lake City; 11:15 a.m.: Westwood vs. Lake City, A.C. Flora vs. West Florence; 11:50 a.m.: A.C. Flora vs. Chesterfield, West Florence vs. Lake City.

Pod C: Ben Lippen, Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee Academy, Lower Richland B, Camden B; the upper practice fields adjoin the Bulldog Athletic Complex track on Bramblewood Plantation Rd., off Ehrenclou Drive;  9:30 a.m.: Lower Richland B vs. Robert E. Lee Academy, Ben Lippen vs. Andrew Jackson; 10:05 a.m.: Robert E. Lee Academy vs. Ben Lippen, Lower

Hogmen Challenge: The Hogmen Challenge will be held at the CHS practice field, located beside the school gym. The event will test linemen’s speed, agility and overall competitiveness. The Hogmen Challenge begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

(Note: Since there are no bleachers at the CHS practice fields and the upper practice fields, spectators may want to bring their own chairs.)
