Since it was a pre-season tournament which did not count against his team’s record, Camden High tennis coach Roger Smoak approached last weekend’s Florence Tennis Association pre-season tournament seeking to get his young team experience against quality competition. While the Bulldogs did not win a match in their four contests in the Pee Dee, their head coach said the weekend was hardly a total loss. On Tuesday, that event started paying immediate dividends. The young Bulldogs stayed on the road and went up against an equally youthful Sumter High squad and returned with a 6-0 blanking of the host Gamecocks in the regular season opener for both sides.“I was real pleased with the way we played in this match,” Smoak said.
