Dogs complete Kellytown sweep

It was almost as if the Camden baseball team was playing a game of “first team to 14 runs wins” in romping to three victories in the rain-shortened Pee Dee Pre-Season Baseball Invitational at Kellytown Stadium. After having opened the event with a 14-1 win over Trinity-Byrnes last Thursday, the Bulldogs pounded McBee and hosts Hartsville, 14-4 and 14-7, on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to capture the Kellytown portion of the eight team event. CHS did not play the winner of the Florence half of the bracket due to weather issues having turned what was to have been a six-day event into a three-game tournament.Carrying three wins in as many days into Friday’s season-opener at Lugoff-Elgin is a step in the right direction for Denny Beckley’s charges.“It was a real exciting week for us,” Beckley said of his team’s trio of victories. “We still need to get a lot better on defense, but we really surprised ourselves with the amount of runs that we were able to score.”Against the host Red Foxes in Saturday afternoon’s finale, the Dogs turned their 4-1 advantage into a 10-1 bulge with a six-run top of the fourth to blow this one open.CHS, which scored in each of the first six frames, scored twice in the first as Will Morgan rapped the first of his four hits on the afternoon with a leadoff single.
