Roberto Pena scored in the seventh minute of play in Camden High’s Saturday afternoon soccer match with visiting Camden Military. That would be all the scoring which Bulldog goalkeeper Richard White would need.
With White posting a clean sheet, the hosts improved to 6-5 on the season with the 1-0 victory. The Bulldogs’ scheduled Friday match at A.C. Flora was postponed due to rain.
Pena’s game-winning goal came on a header off a Nick Ranges throw-in which traveled into the mouth of the goal. Pena did the rest as he headed his shot into the net.
CHS coach Mark Chickering said his team missed several other chances which would have given the hosts some breathing room.
"We dominated possession and had a lot of opportunities to score, but, just could not finish them off," he said.
"We played well in the first half and then started to fade in the second. I think the sun and heat started to wear on us a bit. CMA played real hard and pushed us a good bit."
Moises Mata nearly sealed the deal for the hosts in the 60th minute when the senior fired a shot from just outside the box but the Spartans’ keeper made a diving save and punched it over the crossbar.
While Bulldog scoring chances were plentiful but goals few, Chickering said his defense kept the visitors’ offense in check.
"Our defense was outstanding, keeping pressure off of Richard (White)," said the second-year CHS head coach. "They only had a few shots all day. Most of those were from distance and did not have any real chance of going in."
