CAMDEN FRESHMAN WILL HICKS played his way onto the AAA All-State Golf Team this week in Myrtle Beach.
While the Camden High golf team missed earning a spot in this week’s AAA state golf championship held at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University, the two-day event did have a Bulldog presence along the Grand Strand.CHS freshman Will Hicks and senior teammate Austin Watson earned berths in the event thanks to finishing in the top three among players in the AAA Lower State tournament whose teams did not earn a spot in state championship event.Hicks took full advantage of his opportunity as he opened with a 1-over-par 73 in Monday’s opening round. He came back to shoot an even-par 72 on Tuesday for a two-day, 1-over-par 145. That tied Hicks for second in the field of 87 players, while earning AAA All-State honors.Watson finished tied for 35th as he shot a 79-81—160.Hicks, who won the 2011 Kornegay Memorial Junior Golf Championship title at the Camden Country Club last summer, had been coming into his own under CHS head coach and Camden CC head pro, Matt McCarley.McCarley said Hicks’ performance capped off a half-year of working out the kinks in his golf game.“Over the past six months,” McCarley said, “Will has been working hard and has really been listening to what I’ve been telling him.
