Weary, but still winning.
Playing their third match in as many nights, the Camden High girls’ soccer team used a three-goal hat trick from senior Chloe Grein to win for their third time in as many nights with a 3-1 victory over visiting Buford High Thursday at Zemp Stadium.
“Chloe was able to do what she does best, which is to be aggressive and attack the goal,” said Camden head coach Pam Chickering. “This was our third game in three days, which was a mental and physical challenge for the girls. However, the girls stepped up and even though it was not our best played game they did what they needed to do to win the game.”
The Buford coaching staff was in the stands at Zemp one night earlier to take in the Lady Bulldogs’ 5-0 victory over Andrew Jackson. As Chickering would say, the Lady Yellow Jackets came into the contest well prepared.
“Buford came ready to play, as their coaches came to scout us the night before,” said Chickering referring to Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Andrew Jackson. “Buford held position for the majority of the game, moving the ball around the field and winning the 50-50 balls.
“Buford was a technically sound team and moved the ball well. However, our girls were stingy on defense and did not give them great scoring opportunities. They did score on a corner kick, which are hard to defend. We will be playing Buford again at their place, so I know they will be ready for us on their turf, but this time we will have a day of rest before the game.
“I was proud of the girls’ willing to grind it out and complete the game. Everyone on the team got to play and contribute to the win, which is always great for all the players.”
CHS has another three-match week this week with region matches at Chester and Indian Land tonight and Friday, respectively.
Edwards, West lead CHS JVs over Buford: Joyce Edwards scored half of Camden’s goals while she and Elizabeth West combined for a shutout in goal as the once-beaten Lady Bulldogs junior varsity squad blanked Buford, 6-0, Thursday at Zemp.
In addition to Edwards, Mary Ashton Blanks, Deanna Jeffcoat and West each scored a goal. Edwards later replaced West in the nets to get the shared shutout.
