Lady Knights celebrate top ranking with two wins
AMBI WOOD GOES UP for a kill in a North Central volleyball match. The Lady Knights moved up two spots in the latest class AA state poll.
This is how you celebrate being number one.In its first week atop the state’s AA volleyball poll, North Central followed up a 3-0 sweep of Fairfield Central by upending Andrew Jackson, 3-1, last Monday night and then, returned to Region 3-AA play on Tuesday by taking down Keenan in three games to improve to 12-0 overall and 6-0 in conference action. The win over AJ was doubly special since it also marked “Dig Pink” Night in Boonetown, in which money was raised by the two rivals to help in the fight against breast cancer.Andy Johnson’s charges won the opening game over the Lady Volunteers, 25-20, before falling in game two, 25-22. NC rallied back to close the night with 25-23 and 25-22 victories.“We came out very strong but started to have too many unforced errors in the remaining sets,” Johnson said of the 3-1 victory over AJ. “We did not perform very well in this match, but we still put ourselves in position to get the win.”The Lady Knights had little problem taking care of Keenan as they topped the Raiders in three, 25-13, 26-24 and 25-7.Ashley Rogers and Jo Phillips led several NC players with back-to-back big nights. Rogers had 45 digs, eight aces, three kills and a pair of assists in the matches while Phillips got the offense in gear with 57 assists from her setter’s position to go along with seven digs and a block.Erin Humphries had 24 digs, 20 kills and seven aces while Ambi Wood also had 20 kills with two digs and a block.
