A smaller, quicker offensive line helped pave the way for Camdens 1990 AAA state title
SHAWN ELLIOTT (10) and Andre Carter raise the AAA state championship trophy after Camdens 13-3 win over Hilton Head at Williams-Brice Stadium in 1990 to cap a 15-0 season. The 1990 team will be honored as part of the festivities surrounding Camdens home football game with Lakewood on Friday night at Zemp Stadium.
It had been 26 years between state football championships and Camden High and its fans were more than ready for another trophy to be added to the case along the first five the Bulldogs had won. A promising 1989 campaign ended in a mistake-filled 17-14 loss at Seneca in the second round of the AAA state playoffs. That CHS team, which finished with an 11-2 record, had seemingly everything needed for a run to Williams-Brice; a large and experienced offensive line, speed to burn at the skill positions, a 1,000-yard tailback and a load of senior leadership which was the motivating force for Billy Ammons’ squad.
