CAMDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL WRESTLERS Clinton Jones (left) and Sylvester Lucas dedicated their championship performances in the Carolina Invitational to injured teammate, Robert Gardner.
Having seen teammate Robert Gardner carried off the mat with what turned out to be a severe neck injury at the Carolina Invitational on Jan. 19, Camden Middle School wrestlers Sylvester (S.J.) Lucas and Clinton (C.J.) Jones had no other choice than to go out and win the event for their injured teammate.Four wins in as many matches later, Lucas and Jones gave the War Eagles their first titles in the unofficial state championship by taking the 170- and 185-pound division titles. Camden Middle School finished a program-best sixth in the field which included entries from 83 middle schools throughout the Palmetto State.Gardner, who qualified for the event at 131 pounds, was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and remained there until being released on Monday, following a stay of more than eight days. He continues to mend from his injuries which he sustained that Saturday morning in Lexington.“Our entire team was thinking about Robert throughout the day of the tournament,” said second-year CMS head wrestling coach Jay Gates.
