Lugoff-Elgin warmed up for today’s Region 4-5A tennis opener against visiting Sumter by going on the road and defeating Westwood, 5-1, in a match played last Thursday in Blythewood.
The victory was the second in a row for Jon Blevins’ squad which improved to 2-1 on the young season.
The Demons put this one in the books by winning the second through fifth singles pairings starting with Alex Hinton breezing to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Khameron Evans at second singles. In third singles, Holden Roberts had his way of things in topping Hardin Marlapudi, 6-0, 6-1, before Coby Morrison handed Westwood’s Brennan Davis a pair of 6-1 losses at fourth singles. L-E’s Andrew Boone had an easier go of it at fifth singles in shutting out Eamon Wood 6-0, 6-0.
The Demons’ second doubles pairing of Xavier Hunt and Giordan Whitsett also won in straight sets over Christian Williams and Pratham Sharma, 6-2, 6-2.
The lone win for the hosts came at first singles in which Alex Winslow held off L-E’s Spencer Hinton, 6-3, 6-4.
Dogs stay unbeaten: The Camden High boys’ tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with Thursday’s 6-0 victory over 5A Sumter in a non-region match played on the Roger Smoak Tennis Courts.
Brothers Wilson and David Pope won their first and second singles matches, respectively, by identical 6-0 scores. Ben Battiata was extended to a third-set tie-breaker at third singles before winning his match, 6-2, 2-6, (10-2).
In fourth singles, Camden’s Mac Long won 6-0, 6-0 while Wilson Nash won by the same 6-0 counts at fifth singles.
The Bulldogs’ second doubles pairing of Brett Elliott and Will Cox romped to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
