Nobody can accuse the Camden Military Academy soccer team of being timid.

The Spartans doubled their goal output in one match when they opened their home campaign with an 8-4 victory over visiting 4A foe Lower Richland in a match played at Spartan Field.

Head coach Mohsen Ferjani’s potent offense has now scored 16 goals in their first three outings.

The Spartans started strong from the beginning of play against LR, scoring their first goal within three minutes of kickoff.

Led by Gamero Marco and Martin Nick, the CMA defense held the Diamond Horenets’ attack away from the Spartans’ goal, while goalkeeper Benitez Edward had eight saves in the first half, alone.

The hosts led by four goals, one of which was straight off a corner kick taken by midfielder Villalobos Rodrigo, a third-year Spartan player and a Brazilian native.

“I tell my players to start every game strong; be on the offensive so we can score that first goal,” Ferjani said of playing with the lead. “And, we succeeded in keeping the momentum going”.

The second half was a continuation of what took place in the first 40 minutes as CMA’s midfield controlled the ball and striker Rhodes Kyle proved to be lethal scoring four goals with assists from team captain Diabate Amadou. Left striker Sossana Shean had a goal of his own while a young player, Lawing Sam, added a pair of goals to close out the 8-4 victory.

“We are a team that loves to score goals,” said Ferjani. “We played three games so far and scored a total of 16 goals but, we still had a lot of work ahead of us this season and our goal is to get better with every game we play”.

The Spartans’ next have the rest of this week off and will return to action Tuesday, March 20 when they host Wilson Hall at 4:30 p.m., with both the jayvee and varsity teams taking on the Barons from Sumter County.
