Cheraw edges NC in MCCU title contest

After playing tourney host North Central to a 21-21 first half stalemate, Cheraw won the battle of the second half to win the Mid-Carolina Credit Union Basketball Classic boys’ tournament played inside The Castle in Boonetown on Saturday night.The visiting Braves outscored NC, 27-24, in the final two stanzas to come away with the 48-45 victory.The Knights (6-3) had the ball with the game tied at 45 with 21 seconds to play, but a turnover led to a Braves’ three-point play which turned out to be the difference in the title contest.Cheraw led, 11-10, after the first stanza only to see the hosts even things at 21 at the break. The Braves used a 14-10 third quarter run to take a 35-31 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.NC senior center Kawan Hough posted a double-double with a 12-point, 12-rebound night in the championship contest. Junior forward William Jenkins led all NC scorers with 13 points while grabbing six rebounds.
