Cheraw forfeits game to Post 17

Fans arriving at American Legion Park last Thursday night and seeing an empty, but playable, field may have thought that evening’s League III game between Kershaw County Post 17 and visiting Cheraw was not played due to wet grounds. That was not the case. The little standing water from that day’s late-afternoon rain shower was behind home plate and that could have easily been taken care of had the game been played. The reason for the empty field was that Cheraw, even had the field been bone-dry, did not have enough players to play.Post 17 head coach Craig Smith was prepared to play Cheraw in a doubleheader to make up for Thursday’s game as well as for Wednesday’s game which was stopped by rain in the fourth inning. Instead, he was told by a state American Legion official that Cheraw must forfeit Thursday’s game because it did not have nine players available to travel to Camden. With the 9-0 forfeit win --- as per American Legion rules ---, Post 17 improved to 4-1 in League III play, a game behind Sumter which improved to 5-1 with an 11-1 win over Hartsville (4-4) on Thursday night.
