Midway Saturday afternoon, Kershaw County American Legion baseball coach Craig Smith got in touch with his players and coaches and told them to start making their way to Kelleytown Stadium .With Cheraw having its way with host Hartsville in the final regular season game of the League III slate, it meant that Cheraw and KC Post 17 had some additional work left to be done in order to, finally, straighten out the state American Legion playoff scenario as it involved League III as both Cheraw and the 17ers closed league play with identical 9-7 records.Cheraw needed to win its final four games and needed the 17ers to lose to Sumter in a make-up game in order to take second place outright. Cheraw opened the week with an 11-3 loss to Sumter before Manning-Santee raised the white flag and forfeited both ends of a Friday doubleheader on its home field. That same night, KC fell to Sumter, 4-2.Saturday, after thumping Hartsville, Cheraw waited on KC to arrive and would jump to a 9-1 lead and cruise to a 10-3 victory to lock down second place in League III.17ers draw Murells Inlet: While the 17ers will not get home field advantage by virtue of finishing third, they will get a bit of a break in travel.
