CHS closes in on playoff spot after win over Lakewood

After his team lost to Hartsville last Friday night, Camden High boys’ basketball coach Ron McKie said his team needed to sweep its next two games in order to have a good chance of returning to the AAA state playoffs.Well, the Bulldogs are halfway there.On Tuesday, Camden used a 48-40 win over host Lakewood to improve to 3-5 in Region 6-AAA play. Tonight, the Dogs host a Marlboro County which is 2-6 in 6-AAA play.CHS placed three players --- Josh Council, Jamari Ferguson and Delton Bradford --- in double figures, all with 10 points. Dashon Tucker was next with seven points for the Dogs.Playoff scenario: With a win over visiting Marlboro County tonight, Camden will wrap up a spot in the AAA state playoffs as, at least, the fourth seed from Region 6-AAA.With two games left in league play, Darlington tops the circuit with an 8-0 record followed by, in order: Hartsville (7-1), Crestwood (4-4), Camden (3-5), Marlboro County (2-6) and Lakewood (0-8).Lady Bulldogs fall to Gators: Trailing host Lakewood, 24-20, at halftime, the Camden girls were able to convert on just one shot from the field in the third quarter of what turned out to be a 53-37 LHS victory.The loss dropped Natalie Jeffcoat’s squad to 2-6 in Region 6-AAA play.“We played them pretty evenly in the fourth quarter,” Jeffcoat said, “but we couldn’t overcome that bad third quarter.”Sophomore forward Quasha Jefferson led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points.
