When he first took over the fortunes of the Lugoff-Elgin boys’ tennis team six years ago, Edward Rickwood was asked to build the program from the ground up. At the time, the Demons did not field a squad and, players from the school who wanted to play tennis did so by transferring to Camden High or, play another sport instead. While a tennis player himself, Rickwood had never coached the sport before being asked to take over the reins at L-E. So, when he took on his new job, one of the first people he sought advice from and would later lean on, he said, was Camden High head coach Roger Smoak. On Monday, on the cold and windy courts at L-E High, the Demons scored a landmark victory for the program in knocking off their more-established rivals, topping the Bulldogs, 4-2.After having earned a spot in the 2012 4A state playoffs, Monday’s win was another feather in the Demons’ collective cap.
