Janet Elliot was concerned about how Alajmal and jockey Ross Geraghty started Saturday’s $50,000 Carolina Cup steeplechase. The Hall of Fame trainer had little problem as to where the Gregory D. Hawkins-owned gelding finished as Alajmal opened his 5-year-old campaign by winning the 81st edition of the Camden spring classic at the Springdale Race Course. This year, the event was run as the first leg of the National Steeplechase Association’s (NSA) Sports of Kings Novice Series. The second of three legs will be run on April 27 at the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase in Mineral Spring, N.C.The winning time for the 2 1/8-mile steeplechase was 4:04.2, more than four seconds off the race-record time for novices in the event of 4:00, set by Orison in 2007.
