AUSTIN BROWN GAVE HIS namesake something to cheer about when he broke his maiden in West Virginia last month.
Austin Brown, a 3-year-old colt named after the former Camden resident and Carolina Cup Racing Association Chairman Emeritus, won for the first time in the ninth start of his career last month.Running in an $11,000, 6 ½-fulrong race at Charles Town Races in West Virginia on Aug. 9, the son of Fusaichi Pegasus moved from third after the first quarter of a mile to take the lead at the half-mile juncture. Ridden by Nicholas Milford, Austin Brown lengthened his lead to four lengths at the top of the stretch before going on to a 3 ¾-length victory for owner Aiken-based owner, Dogwood Stable.Cubist outduels Cat Feathers in Jeffords Stakes: In another exciting Steeplechase Thursday finish, owner-trainer and part-time Camden resident Jonathan Sheppard’s Cubist closed powerfully after the last fence of Saratoga Race Course’s $75,000 Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Filly & Mare Stakes to catch Cat Feathers and win by a neck last Thursday.Cat Feathers, owned and trained by Camden’s Kate Dalton and ridden by her husband Bernie, who had taken the lead approaching the final fence, ran on well to hold second easily, 5 3/4 lengths ahead of Magalen O. Bryant’s Well Fashioned. Leading owner Irv Naylor’s recent import Cordillera finished fourth, a length farther back, after bidding for the lead at the final fence.Ridden by Brian Crowley, Cubist went off at 5.40-1 and collected the first stakes victory of her career.
