Heading toward the 12th and final flight of fences all by his lonesome, Mark Watts took a peek beneath his right shoulder to see where the rest of the field was as he and Balance the Budget bounded their way home in Saturday’s $75,000 Carolina Cup feature. What the Camden resident saw in his rear-view mirror was Sean McDermott and Special Skills lingering several lengths behind. Special Skills, trained by nine-time and defending National Steeplechase Association champion Jack Fisher, made one last surge at Watts and his mount.
