CCE, Kirkwood grads pile up victories

While it may not have been on the flat track, The Elkstone Group LLC’s Bodie Island roared to a 2 ¾-length win a short trip from where he was developed when he jumped his way to victory in the $20,000 Hobkirk Hill Starter Allowance at the Nov. 23 Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup in Camden.The 5-year-old gelding was broken in Camden at Donna Freyer’s Custom Care Equine and after being sent to trainer Jonathan Sheppard for a career on the flat, Bodie Island returned to CCE on several occasions for rehabilitation stints while also being groomed for a second career as a steeplechaser. The win over the Springdale Race Course for trainer Richard Valentine was Bodie Island’s second victory over fences and third overall in a career in which he has earned $52,887 from 15 career starts with three wins, two seconds and a third.On Sunday, Dec. 1, CCE graduate Lady of Gold won a $77,000 allowance race at Aqueduct.The Elkstone Group LLC Lady of Gold is trained by Phillip Serpe who had Jose Lezcano in the saddle for the ride in the 1 1/16-mile race on the turf course. Winner by a length and a half, the final clocking for the race was 1:45.18.The win was the second in nine career starts for the 3-year-old Medaglia d’Oro filly which has a second and three thirds which have earned her connections --- which own the Camden Training Center --- $135,110.That same day at Aqueduct, CCE graduate J W Blue won a $25,000 claiming race.Bred by the Elkstone Group LLC, trained by its owner, David Jacobson who gave a leg up to David Cohen, J W Blue traveled the mile race on the dirt in a time of 1:38.14.In a career in which the 5-year-old gelding has made 26 starts with four wins, four seconds and three third, J W Blue has brought in $290,539.CCE had two more reasons to give thanks on Thanksgiving as a pair of its grads scored at Aqueduct and at Churchill Downs.In the New York suburbs, Eye Luv Lulu broke his maiden at second asking for trainer Carlos Martin by winning a $45,000 maiden claiming race at Aqueduct with Phil Treator on board.
