Local ties abound in trio of Eclipse Award finalists

A trio of steeplechasers --- each with Camden connections --- were named as the three finalists for the 2012 Eclipse Award for steeplechasing.The annual award recognizes excellence in Thoroughbred racing and honorees are selected by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters. Winners in all 17 horse and human categories will be announced at the 42nd annual Eclipse Awards to be held Saturday evening, Jan. 19 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.The three steeplechase finalists were Demonstrative, Divine Fortune and Pierrot Lunaire.Demonstrative, owned by Jacqueline Ohrstrom and trained last winter on the grounds of the Camden Training Center by Richard Valentine, capped his 5-year-old campaign with a stirring run in winning the $100,000 Colonial Cup at the Springdale Race Course in Camden on No. 17.Last at the 17th and last fence of the last chase of the 2012 National Steeplechase Association season, jockey Matt McCarron took his mount and passed the remaining seven jumpers ahead of him --- out of the starting field of nine --- and overtook Divine Fortune for the one-length victory.Demonstrative danced all but one dance in 2012.
