John Shirreffs will forever be known as trainer of the iconic Zenyatta, the 2010 Horse of the Year and 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic champion. The California-based trainer has been known not to rush a horse, giving the younger runners a chance to develop at their own pace. Among the runners in Shirreffs’ barn at Santa Anita Park is Mr. Commons, a 3-year-old colt who was developed at the Camden Training Center by trainer Mickey Preger Jr. Mr. Commons, by Artie Schiller out of Joustabout, had a none-too-memorable first start, finishing sixth in a field of seven in a $38,000 maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds at Hollywood Park in the rain on Dec. 18, 2010.
