Veteran horse trainer Charlie Cushman dies at 85
Charlie Cushman T
Charles Charlie V.B. Cushman Jr.
He wore a tweed blazer on his back, rather than a blue cape with a red “S” emblazoned on it as he watched the early races of the 1949 Carolina Cup from his spot in the infield. Never in his wildest dreams could then-University of Virginia undergrad Charles “Charlie” V.B. Cushman Jr. have anticipated he would be suiting up and pulling on a pair of riding boots and working his arms through the silks bearing the white and green of owner Carter Brown a few minutes later. While Superman changed in a phone booth, Cushman went from his suit for the day into racing gear to ride the 11-year-old Moonshee to an improbable third-place finish in the Camden spring classic ---- which was contested for a $500 purse --- that day.
