Murphy gets a three-peat in Columbia city tourney
KELLI MURPHY CAPTURED the Columbia Womens Golf Championship for the third time in as many years with her win last week.
Having opened last week’s Sonic Women’s City Golf Championship with a first round 1-under par 71 to lead the field in the Columbia event, Elgin’s Kelli Murphy left the door open with a second day round of 74.For any competitor thinking they might be able to put a foot in the door in Thursday’s final round, well, the rising junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School slammed it shut with a final day 5-under par 67 to cruise to a 13-stroke victory at Forest Lake Country Club. The championship was Murphy’s third in as many years in the biggest event on the Columbia golf schedule for women. She became just the second player to accomplish the feat in the history of the tourney.Murphy went 71-74-67 for a 212 total, easily outdistancing Kathryn Miranda, who plays at the College of Charleston, who finished with a 225 after having closed with a 71 after opening with a 78 and a 76 in the first two rounds.A starter on the L-E boys’ golf squad since the seventh grade, Murphy qualified for the 4A Upper State boys’ golf championship at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club in Inman earlier this spring. She locked down a slot in that event after firing a 77 in the Region 4-4A tournament held at Wildewood in May.Murphy led Mike Robinson’s young squad to a 12-5 record this past season.
