FORMER L-E STANDOUT and current Auburn freshman Kelli Murphy battled tough conditions to win the Carolinas Young Amateur Championship in a tournament played earlier this week in Pinehurst.
PINEHURST, N.C. -- Kelli Murphy turned part of her Christmas vacation into a busman’s holiday as the Elgin resident and Auburn University freshman won the women’s division of the seventh Carolinas Young Amateur played over the Magnolia course at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. A former standout golfer at and a 2014 graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High school, Murphy battled cold temperatures, rugged playing conditions and tough competitors to add another tournament title to her growing list. Murphy, a freshman playing collegiate golf at Auburn, had to go extra holes to win the women’s division. Murphy and Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, N.C., both finished tied with a 36-hole total of even par 144.
