Murphy wins two matches for Team Carolinas golfers

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Kelli Murphy, a rising senior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, led the Carolinas’ team with two wins in as many events in the 12th Mid-Atlantic Girls’ Challenge, which concluded on Sunday at The Country Club of North Carolina’s Cardinal Course.The eight-player Virginia-Maryland team notched a one-point comeback victory, 6½-5½, to defeat the squad of the best junior girls’ golfers from North and South Carolina. Carolinas leads the all-time series, 8-3-1.After trailing by two points, 3-1, following Saturday’s opening day four-ball encounters, Virginia-Maryland registered a three-point victory in concluding singles’ matches. Virginia-Maryland accounted for five wins and a halve to post its second win in the past three years in the series, having won in 2011 at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club.Murphy, an Elgin resident, started off the two-day event by teaming with Madison Moosa of Charlotte for a 2 and 1 win over Elizabeth Bose (Norfolk, Va.) and Khushboo Thiagaraj (Haymarket, Va.) in four-ball play.
