Hayes' slam helps KC to fifth straight win

Austin Hayes smacked a grand slam to ignite a seven-run eighth inning as visiting Kershaw County rallied for a 10-7 win over Hartsville in a League III American Legion baseball game played Friday night in Kelleytown.The win was the fifth in a row for Craig Smith’s troops (6-1), which host Sumter tonight in a meeting between for sole possession of first place in the circuit.Trailing, 7-3, after seven frames, Grayson King opened the eighth inning with a double for Post 17. Gunner Smith, Broderick Gaither and Lawson Stokes all walked with the latter of the trio bringing a run to make it 7-4. Hayes then belted his first blast of the season to give the guests an 8-7 lead.The inning continued with Gunner Smith giving the 17ers breathing room with a two-run, two-out double.The three-run cushion would be more than enough for Zac Bowers, who came on in relief of Grey Hoke in the seventh and worked three innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball.
