Jr. P-17ers state tourney bound
KC sweeps Waccamaw; will head to Socastee on Saturday
ETHAN BEASLEY HAD TWO hits in the Post 17 Junior American Legion teams 7-4 win over Waccamaw on Wednesday night. The locals will open state tournament play Saturday at Socastee High School.
It has been a smooth ride to the state championship tournament for the Kershaw County Junior Post 17 baseball team. After having dispatched of Bennettsville in two games last week in their best-of-three, opening round state tournament series, the locals punched their ticket into the state tourney by sweeping Waccamaw in two games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.By virtue of winning both games from Waccamaw, Rusty O’Cain and his charges will head to Socastee High School Stadium in Myrtle Beach for Saturday’s state tournament opener, presumably, against League III champion Florence. Game time for the first game in the eight-team, double-elimination event was not announced as of press time on Thursday. This will be the 17ers’ second appearance in the state tournament in the past three seasons. In 2010, KC played it way into the event under current Post 17 Senior American Legion head coach Craig Smith.Following Monday’s first game with Waccamaw being rained out, the 17ers proved to be no worse for the extra day’s rest as Brock Robinson fired a complete game three-hitter in a 5-1 KC win at American Legion Park.
