Lady Demons pound RNE; CHS drops a doubleheader

Thanks in large part to a 30-point second half, the Lugoff-Elgin girls’ basketball team snapped a nine-game losing skid with a 46-26 victory over visiting Richland Northeast Tuesday night inside the Demons Den.The win gave Von Duncan’s Lady Demons a 4-12 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Region 4-4A play.L-E trailed, 9-8, after the first quarter before using an 8-3 second quarter surge to carry a 16-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.The hostesses saw their lead chopped to 27-24 after three quarters of play, only to see L-E explode for 19 fourth quarter points while its defense limited the Lady Cavaliers to two points in pulling away for a 20-point victory.Lady Demon senior Aneka Dixon nearly outscored the visitors by herself as she poured in a game-high 22 points with nine of those coming on a trio of 3-point baskets. Samantha Jean was next with six points.Defensively, forward Cady Murphy pulled down 11 rebounds with two blocks. Jean added a trio of blocked shots.Cavs upend Demons: While the Lady Demons were able to get back on the winning track, the Demons fell for the ninth straight time in a 65-52 defeat at the hands of Richland Northeast.The loss was the eighth in as many Region 4-4A outings for Delton Belton’s squad.Michael Sumpter led L-E with 13 points Stephan Hunter was next with 11 while Bobby Gary added 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds.Dogs dumped by Knights: Camden’s chances to earn a AAA state tournament berth took a hit Tuesday night as the Bulldogs slipped to 2-4 in Region 6-AAA play with a 51-45 loss to host Crestwood in Sumter County.The Knights’ win gave the two sides a split of their season series.
