Berkeley scored five runs in between a pair of two-run blasts from Lugoff-Elgin’s Kellee Branham and Bailey Douglas to hold off the visiting Lady Demons to win the 4A District VIII softball title, 5-4, on Wenesday in Moncks Corner.
The loss capped a 20-6-1 season for James Marlow’s squad which did not list a senior on the roster.
L-E used a second inning home run from Branham to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Lady Stags evened things with a pair in the third before scoring three times in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Douglas went yard for the seventh time this season to draw the visitors to within, 5-4, only for L-E to leave a runner on third in the top of the seventh as the game ended.
The Lady Demons, who fell to Berkeley, 6-2, in second round action Saturday, advanced to the district finals with a 10-0 win over Wilson on Monday. Emma Spradley was inside the pitching circle and recorded the shutout.
